Celestron C8-N Modifications

To completely eliminate image shift while focusing and also to be able to micro-step the focuser for fine tuning, the stock focuser was replaced with a Crayford style from MoonLite Telescope Accessories. The height is perfect in that when the camera is at prime focus, the bottom of the draw tube is flush with the inside of the OTA wall so there is no protrusion into the light path as with the stock focuser. The electric stepper focuser with temperature compensation is shown mounted on the side. FocusMax is used to automate focusing using an ASCOM interface. The motor also acts as a brake and holds the equipment weight with absolutely no slippage.

After I set up, I always check my collimation with a laser. Having to remove the rear mirror cover to make any adjustments was a pain, so I made a cardboard template to plot the three mirror adjustment and lock screw locations and them superimpose them on the rear cover. After drilling the correct hole diameters, presto....instant access to the adjustment screws with the cover on.
